Information on the school workforce in England, including the number of teachers with and without qualified teacher status (QTS), is collected as part of the annual School Workforce Census each November. Information is published in the ‘School Workforce in England’ statistical publication, which can be found here: https://explore-education-statistics.service.gov.uk/find-statistics/school-workforce-in-england.

As at November 2010, 180 of 43,699 (0.4%) full time equivalent (FTE) head teachers and assistant head teachers in state-funded schools in England did not hold QTS. In November 2021, 315 of 52,619 (0.6%) FTE head teachers and assistant head teachers did not hold QTS. This information by Local Authority has been provided in the attached table.

The Department supports teachers and head teachers to continuously develop their expertise, including through a new and updated suite of National Professional Qualifications (NPQs). Eligible teachers and head teachers can gain scholarships to undertake fully funded NPQs, including specific qualifications in Headship, Executive Leadership, Senior Leadership and Early Years Leadership.
