Question to the Department of Health and Social Care:
To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, what assessment his Department has made of the implications for people's health of using artificial sweeteners.
All sweeteners used in food in the European Union must undergo a rigorous safety assessment by the European Food Safety Authority before they can be used. As part of the evaluation and authorisation process, conditions of use (including limits if appropriate) are set based on the maximum amount considered safe to consume each day over the course of a lifetime. EU food additives legislation stipulates the conditions of use for all food additives.
