In the British Energy Security Strategy, the Government committed to designing new business models for hydrogen transport and storage infrastructure by 2025. In August 2022, the Government published a consultation seeking stakeholders’ views on high level business model design options for hydrogen transport and storage, including the need for a strategic planning function for the roll out of transport and storage infrastructure. The Government intends to publish a response to the consultation in Q2 2023. The Government recognises the role energy storage plays in both system flexibility and energy security and is considering what other interventions might be necessary in the longer term.
