NHS England and NHS Improvement commission National Health Service sight testing services from high street primary eye care providers. When undertaking such tests, ophthalmic practitioners have a duty to carry out such examinations to detect signs of injury, disease or abnormality and refer the patient for further investigation or treatment if necessary. The NHS does not define the procedures which should be included in a sight test as this will vary with changing techniques and technology and according to the clinical needs of the patient.
