The UK has begun engagement with the new Government of Malaysia across the broad range of our shared objectives. Shortly after the election result on 9 May, the Prime Minister sent a letter of congratulations to Prime Minister Mahathir. Our High Commissioner in Kuala Lumpur was the first foreign envoy to see Prime Minister Mahathir following his election, and has also met the Home, Finance, Economic, Education, and Transport Ministers in recent weeks. We will continue this engagement as the final ministers are appointed. The former Foreign Secretary also met Anwar Ibrahim, Leader of the governing Pakatan Harapan coalition, in London on 11 June. The Secretary of State for Defence visited Malaysia on 30 May to meet his new counterpart, Mohamad bin Sabu.
