The majority of central government funding for home to school transport is made available to local authorities through the local government finance settlement provided by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government.

Additional funding is provided each year by the Department for Education to support local authorities in meeting their ‘extended rights’ duties for children from low-income families. The level of funding is determined by the number of free school meal pupils eligible for extended rights transport.
