The data is based on embryos created from stimulated fresh in vitro fertilisation cycles, whether these embryos have been used at any time by the patient or a donor recipient.

The HFEA register database tracks complex movements of embryos. The number of embryos remaining in storage has been estimated by the number of fresh embryos created, minus the fresh embryos transferred, fresh embryos allowed to perish, frozen embryos transferred and frozen embryos allowed to perish. This may not account for small numbers of embryos which have been used for other purposes, moved between centres or abroad or thawed and found not to be viable.

The data is as shown on the HFEA’s register database on 10 October 2018. This is a live database so these figures reflect the data on this day and are likely to change over time.
