Question to the Department of Health and Social Care:
To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, how many people with Type 2 Diabetes in England have had access to bariatric surgery; and whether his Department has plans to increase the level access to bariatric surgery by people with Type 2 diabetes.
In 2017/18 there were 2,546 counts of finished admission episodes with a primary or secondary diagnosis of type 2 diabetes and a main or secondary procedure for bariatric surgery.
Clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) are responsible for commissioning complex obesity services for adults, which include all bariatric surgical procedures and the associated care. NHS England would expect CCGs to take in to account guidelines issued in 2014 by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence on the identification, assessment and management of obesity that makes recommendations on the use of bariatric surgery.
