The Department provides capital funding through the Basic Need grant to support Local Authorities to meet their statutory duty to provide sufficient school places. Funding is calculated using Local Authorities’ own pupil forecasts and school capacity data.

In March 2023, the Department announced Solihull Council will receive just over £7.8 million to support the provision of new school places needed for September 2026. This takes their total funding allocated between 2011 and 2026 to just over £41.2 million.
