Question to the Department for Energy Security & Net Zero:
To ask the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, whether his Department has made an assessment of the potential merits of solid carbon sequestration.
True solid carbon sequestration involves reduction of carbon dioxide to carbon, for example by using liquid metal reductants, before the solid carbon is stored in a carbon storage facility. This approach requires a high energy input and has not been studied in detail by the Department. Lower-energy methods of storing carbon as a solid are through the production of biochar or through mineralisation and the Department supports the development of these technologies through the Net Zero Innovation Portfolio.
