Question to the Department for Education:
To ask the Secretary of State for Education, if he will take steps to integrate education on individual identity for young people into personal, social, health and economic education.
Schools must have regard to the relationships education and relationships and sex education and health education statutory guidance. This states that pupils should be taught the facts and the law about sex, sexuality, sexual health, and gender identity in an age-appropriate and inclusive way.
Schools have flexibility over how they deliver these subjects. They can develop an integrated approach that is sensitive to the needs and backgrounds of their pupils.
Schools should be a safe and welcoming space for all pupils, regardless of how they identify. The department understands this can be a difficult subject to address, and we will be working with the Equality and Human Rights Commission to develop guidance in this area.
