Question
To ask the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, what estimate he has made of the proportion of properties in which the costs of installing a smart meter will outweigh the benefits.
The Government’s Smart Metering Impact Assessment estimates a net present value benefit of £6.2bn based on present value costs of £10.9bn and present value benefits of £17.1bn for an appraisal period up to 2030.
The modelling underlying the cost benefit analysis for smart metering considers the impact on the average household.
Our modelling approach does not allow us to estimate the proportion of properties where the costs of installation could exceed the benefits.
