Question to the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office:

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, further to the FCDO Annual Report and Accounts 2025-26, HC521, of 16 July 2026, page 247, whether the UK Government provided Overseas Development Assistance to India in 2025-26, and why there is a negative figure for 2024.

The UK Government spent Official Development Assistance (ODA) in India in 2025-26 and this data will be published in due course. While the UK has phased out traditional bilateral aid programmes in India, India remains ODA-eligible. Our funding in India is focused on tackling climate change and is primarily delivered through investments in a modernised partnership with the Indian government. Our approach helps build markets and mobilise private capital, creating opportunities for firms and workers in both countries.

UK ODA spending is reported on a calendar year basis. In 2024, the UK's ODA spend on India-related programmes was negative, as we received more from previous investments than we invested that year. This is because our funding is primarily through co-investments with the Government of India, not traditional aid grants.
