Question to the Home Office:

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, what steps his Department is taking to support improvement in police forces that are rated as inadequate or requiring improvement by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services.

The Home Office underpins accountability for police performance, in part by funding Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue Services (HMICFRS) to inspect the efficiency and effectiveness of forces. Additionally, we established the College of Policing to set standards and identify good practice.

The inspectorate runs a force monitoring process through which forces may receive support to help improve their performance from organisations such as the College of Policing or the National Police Chiefs Council. We expect all Chief Constables and Police and Crime Commissioners to take responsibility for ensuring performance improvements are made in response to inspection findings and recommendations.
