Question to the Department of Health and Social Care:
To ask the Secretary of State for Health, what steps his Department is taking to improve the quality and accessibility of information available on diabetes in GPs' surgeries and pharmacies.
The NHS Health Check is a national programme that aims to prevent heart disease, stroke, diabetes and kidney disease, and raise awareness of dementia both across the population and within high risk and vulnerable groups. Public Health England (PHE) has produced an information leaflet for the NHS Health Check programme which can be made available in general practice surgeries and pharmacies. This leaflet has been produced in a number of languages and a variety of accessible formats including Easy Read and Braille. The leaflet explains what a person can expect when they receive their NHS Health Check and the risk factors for diabetes.
PHE and NHS England are setting up a programme to prevent type 2 diabetes by reducing obesity. This is a commitment in the PHE document; From evidence to action. We are currently looking at the feasibility of the diabetes prevention programme which has been operating for several years in the United States and, in that context, are considering the need to raise public awareness about diabetes.
