Question to the Department of Health and Social Care:

To ask the Secretary of State for Health, what the socio-economic breakdown is of maternal deaths in each of the last five years for which information is available.

Data on the socio-economic classification of maternal deaths has been published as part of the Confidential Enquiries into Maternal Deaths and Morbidity. ‘Saving Lives, Improving Mothers’ Care – Lessons learned to inform future maternity care from the UK and Ireland Confidential Enquiries into Maternal Deaths and Morbidity 2009 – 2012’ was published on 9 December 2014 and can be found at:

The report does not break down the data by individual year. The figures for all maternal deaths in 2009 – 2012 in the United Kingdom, shown by socio-economic status, are in the following table:
