The new points-based system will be introduced from 1 January 2021. The operation of the system will be kept under review and, as the policy statement published on 19 February makes clear, further changes will be made following consultation with stakeholders across our United Kingdom.

A programme of engagement will begin this month to raise awareness of the new system, ensuring those affected by the changes are fully aware of what it means for them and understand how the system will operate.
