The Government most recently considered the civil and criminal legal aid thresholds in March 2016. There was no formal consultation with members of the legal profession or the judiciary as part of that review.

As part of the publication of the Legal Support Action Plan on 7 February 2019, the Government announced a review of the legal aid means testing thresholds and their interaction with the wider eligibility criteria.

For the review, we will bring together data, evidence and expertise from across government as well as from wider stakeholders to ensure that the process is as thorough and consistent as possible. Following our review we will bring forward any changes as soon as is practical.
