Question to the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government:

To ask the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, with reference to the Competition and Markets Authority's press release entitled Parking charges: CMA takes action to drive improvements for motorists, published on 16 July 2026, whether she has made an assessment of the potential merits of legislative changes to strengthen consumer protections in the private parking sector beyond those proposed by the Competition and Markets Authority.

The Government is committed to improving standards and strengthening consumer protections across the private parking sector. The Government continues to consider a wide range of evidence and stakeholder views, including those put forward by the CMA, as we finalise the new Private Parking Code of Practice.

The Code will be supported by an independent Scrutiny and Oversight Board and a UKAS-approved Certification Scheme. Compliance will be linked to access to DVLA vehicle keeper data, enabling ongoing monitoring of compliance and helping to ensure operators meet the standards required by the Code.
