Question to the Home Office:

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, how many serious crime detectives were employed by each territorial police force in 2010; and what estimate he has made of the number of serious crime detectives that are employed by each territorial police force in 2019.

The Home Office does not hold information on the number of serious crime detectives centrally.

The Home Office collects and publishes information on the primary roles performed by officers in England and Wales, broken down by Police Force Area, in the annual 'Police workforce, England and Wales' statistical bulletin, the latest of which can be accessed here: https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/police-workforce-england-and-wales-31-march-2017

However, these data relate to all officers and detectives cannot be separately identified from other officers. Furthermore, data for years prior to 2015 were collected under a different framework and are therefore not comparable to more recent years.

The latest available data, which covers the situation as at 31 March 2018, can be found in Table F1 of the data tables accompanying the main release. Police workers with multiple responsibilities are recorded under their primary function, for example ‘Serious & Organised Crime Units’. Figures are presented on a full-time equivalent basis.
