The Government recognises the strength of feeling following the 2026 World Cup semi-final match, including in regard to the banner referencing the Falkland Islands. The behaviour of members of the Argentine team on that occasion was unfortunate and disappointing. The UK's position on the Falkland Islands is unwavering. The Islands are British and will remain so. Self-determination rests with the islanders and our commitment to the Falklands will never waver.

Disciplinary matters arising from FIFA competitions are for FIFA to consider and we welcome the sanctions imposed by FIFA in relation to this incident on the Argentinian Football Association.
