Question to the HM Treasury:
To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer, whether her Department has considered aligning motorcycle Vehicle Excise Duty with the weight‑based approach proposed for other vehicle categories in the eVED consultation.
All UK-registered electric and plug-in hybrid cars will pay Electric Vehicle Excise Duty (eVED). eVED will not apply to other vehicle types such as motorcycles, vans, and buses when introduced in April 2028. This is because the transition to electric for these vehicle types is less advanced than for cars at this stage.
Under Vehicle Excise Duty (VED), different rates apply to cars, vans, and motorcycles, and the rate for each vehicle is calculated according to a range of factors, such as its date of first registration, weight, or CO2 emissions. VED for motorcycles is currently based on engine size. There are no current plans to review how VED is calculated for all road vehicles including motorcycles.
