The Department for Transport has published guidance on the use of traffic calming measures, including road humps, in Local Transport Note 1/07 ‘Traffic Calming’, which is available from: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/traffic-calming-ltn-107.

The primary purpose of road humps is to reduce vehicle speeds in areas where inappropriate speed is a problem. Local authorities have the flexibility to make their own decisions about the design of their streets and they have a responsibility to take account of all local considerations including mitigating any detrimental effects of noise, ground-borne vibrations and air quality.
