Responsibility for maintaining local roads rests with local highway authorities.

The Government provides substantial funding for local highway maintenance, including through the West Midlands Combined Authority’s £2.4 billion Transport for City Regions Settlement, and previously via Royal Sutton Coldfield's local highway authority, Birmingham City Council.

The Department keeps local roads funding under review, and it is for local authorities to determine how best to allocate available funding in accordance with local priorities.
