Question to the Department for Education:
To ask the Secretary of State for Education, what steps her Department is taking to improve teacher recruitment in STEM subjects.
The latest Initial Teacher Training Census (December 2025) reported over 6,800 new postgraduate entrants for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) subjects, an increase of 22%. This is the first time that the department’s overall STEM Initial Teacher Training (ITT) target has been met since comparable statistics began in 2012/13.
The overall number of entrants to ITT has also increased, up 13% from the previous year, and we have achieved over 71% of our 6,500 additional teachers pledge.
