Question to the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government:
To ask the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, whether she has made an estimate of the highest council tax bill that will be levied in England on a Band H home with the top tier council tax surcharge for a (a) primary home and (b) second home.
The government annually publishes statistics on the council tax levels set by different local authorities. This is available here. It is for individual councils to decide their level of council tax and whether they apply a council tax on second homes in their area.
The valuation of properties for the High Value Council Tax Surcharge will be done in a targeted way, without specific reference to existing council tax bands. This will apply to properties worth over £2m, with rates ranging from £2,500 for properties worth over £2m, to £7,500 for properties worth over £5m.
