Question to the Department for Energy Security & Net Zero:

To ask the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, whether her Department considers it acceptable that homeowners may be unable to obtain maintenance, upgrades or the installation of battery storage for existing solar photovoltaic systems solely because those systems do not hold MCS certification.

MCS certification is not a prerequisite for consumers to access inspection and maintenance services.

Where chosen, MCS certification provides assurance across the full design, installation and commissioning process. A post-installation inspection alone cannot demonstrate that all applicable requirements were met throughout that process, and MCS therefore does not permit retrospective certification.

The certification of battery storage by MCS does not require a pre-exiting solar PV system to be certified.
