Question to the HM Treasury:

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer, whether his Department has considered varying Vehicle Excise Duty according to vehicle width; and whether he plans to commission an assessment of the potential impact of such a change on motorists.

Different Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) rates apply to cars, vans, heavy goods vehicles and motorcycles, and the rate for each vehicle is calculated according to a range of factors, such as its date of first registration, weight, or carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.

The Chancellor makes decisions on tax policy at fiscal events, and does not routinely comment on proposals.
