Question to the Ministry of Justice:

To ask the Secretary of State for Justice, how many restricted patients are detained in hospital in England and Wales, broken down by principal index offence, using as specific a category as possible, and by hospital type.

Restricted Patients statistics are published in April in each year. However, we are unable to determine the principal index offence in all cases. We do however publish offence details by offence groups, and this can be found at table 3: Restricted_Patients_Statistics_2025.ods. Table 3 provides offence group breakdowns over the past 4 years and by gender.

To provide a breakdown by hospital type would be at a disproportionate cost.
