Local authorities have existing statutory powers to tackle excessive noise from residential properties including Houses in Multiple Occupation. Where a property has been proven to be a statutory nuisance through excessive noise, councils must serve an abatement notice on the people responsible for the statutory nuisance, or, if this is not possible, on a premises owner or occupier. Failure to comply with the notice can result in prosecution and a fine.
