Question to the Department of Health and Social Care:
To ask the Secretary of State for Health, what steps he is taking to improve the diagnosis and treatment of cytomegalovirus in infants and children.
Current UK National Screening Council guidance states that screening for the virus in pregnancy and the neonatal period are not recommended. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guideline CG62 on Antenatal care states that the available evidence does not support routine cytomegalovirus screening in pregnant women and it should not be offered. NHS England expects trusts to give regard to NICE guidelines.
