Question to the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office:
To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, what assessment he has made of the compatibility of the President of Egypt's ratification of death sentences against 12 political prisoners arising from the Rabaa Dispersal Case with Egypt’s commitments under Article 2 of the EU-Egypt Association Agreement, as incorporated into the UK-Egypt Association Agreement.
The UK is opposed to the death penalty in all circumstances. Following recent cases, we have made clear to the Egyptian Government at a senior level our serious concern about the use of the death penalty. Government's international obligations and commitments, including on human rights, are always of paramount importance when it makes decisions on its trading relations.
