The Road Investment Strategy has a £300m Environmental Fund for tackling 1150 Noise Important Areas by 2020. Highways England has undertaken previous research which led to the use of low noise surfacing that is currently used across the strategic road network. Research is ongoing to evaluate the effectiveness of other noise-reducing surfaces deployed across Europe, as well as investigating potential noise mitigation measures for concrete roads.
