Question to the Ministry of Justice:

To ask the Secretary of State for Justice, whether her Department has assessed the potential merits of prohibiting defendants, witnesses and others participating in court proceedings from obscuring their faces, except on medical grounds, or in circumstances where a trial anonymity order has been granted.

Prohibiting those participating in court proceedings from obscuring their faces is a matter for the judiciary to decide upon on a case-by-case basis. The Government is satisfied with the operation of the current practice.
