The NHS Long Term Plan sets out the ambition that, the proportion of cancers diagnosed at stages 1 and 2 will rise from approximately 54% to 75% by 2028 and 55,000 more people each year will survive their cancer for at least five years after diagnosis.

The Long Term Plan focuses primarily on fast and early diagnosis for all cancers, raising greater awareness of symptoms of cancer, lowering the threshold for referral by general practitioners and accelerating access to diagnosis and treatment by investing in rapid diagnostic centres and targeted lung health checks.
