Question to the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy:

To ask the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, what estimate he has made of the number of sole traders operating in the UK in each year since 1990; and if he will make a statement.

Estimates of the number of sole traders are available from 1996 in the table below. Due to an improvement to the methodology in 2010 there is a break in the series; an estimate for 2009 on the new basis has been provided for information.
