Question to the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office:
To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, what representations he and officials of his Department have made to the government of Cameroon on reports of violence against anglophone Cameroonians; and if he will make a statement.
The British High Commission Yaoundé is closely following the situation in Cameroon. We are engaged with the Government of Cameroon and will continue to raise this with them. Respect of the rule of law, and the right to peaceful demonstrations are critical tenets of democracy.
The UK believes that all parties have a responsibility to uphold and protect the peace and stability of Cameroon and that legal and peaceful means should be used to voice any grievances. We support the AU Commission’s call for restraint and encouraging a continuation of the dialogue initiated by the Government in order to find a solution to the social, political and economic issues motivating the protests.
