The Department is undertaking an analysis of all school buildings to identify those over four storeys high, to ensure we include all buildings that are over 18m in our analysis. This analysis is to establish what, if any, external cladding has been used on these buildings. For these buildings, it will also check that where a fire risk assessment has identified the need to install a sprinkler system, installation has taken place. This exercise will cover school buildings of all ages.

The Department has no plans to introduce any changes that would make fire safety laws for schools less strict. Alongside the rest of Government, we will take forward any findings from the public inquiry into the tragic Grenfell Tower fire and ensure any recommendations for schools are implemented.
