Question to the Home Office:

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, if she will make it her policy that all police forces record (a) traffic stops of drivers and (b) the ethnicity of drivers so stopped.

The police have the power to stop a vehicle under section 163 of the Road Traffic Act (1988). The decision to use this power is an operational matter for the police. There are no plans for the Home Office to issue guidance to the police to record the numbers of traffic stops and the ethnicity of drivers.
