We condemn the recent sentencing of Aung San Suu Kyi and President Win Myint which is clearly politically motivated. Since the military coup on 1 February, the UK has consistently called for the immediate release of all those detained arbitrarily. The Foreign Secretary, in a statement on 6 December, called on the regime to release all political prisoners, including Aung San Suu Kyi, engage in constructive dialogue and allow a return to democracy. The UK also secured a UN Security Council statement on 8 December expressing concern at the sentencing. The UK remains committed to deescalating the crisis and supporting all those calling for a return to democracy.
