Asylum decision-makers carefully consider protection needs by assessing all available evidence provided by the claimant in the context of published country information.

They receive extensive training on considering asylum claims and must follow published Home Office policy guidance. Protection is normally granted where a well-founded fear of persecution or serious harm in their country of origin is established.

Those who are found not to need protection are refused but have a right of appeal to the independent courts. Once their appeals rights are exhausted they are required to leave the UK.
