Question to the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office:

To ask Her Majesty's Government what assessment they have made of the alleged role of the interim leader of Sudan, General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, in any genocide or war crime committed by Janjaweed forces in Darfur.

​The UK continues to engage with a range of opposition members, Transitional Military Council and members of the protest movement. As part of these interactions our Ambassador to Khartoum met the Deputy Chair of the Transitional Military Committee, Mohamed Hamdan Dagolo ("Hametti"), on April 15 to call for steps to improve the situation in Sudan; a swift move to a civilian transitional government; and, the release of all political detainees. We have expressed concerns at the past role of the Rapid Support Forces. We have said in public and in private, that there must be accountability for the crimes committed by members of the former regime. We condemn the recent violent attacks by Sudanese security forces against peaceful protestors in Sudan, which left many dead or injured. The Transitional Military Council bears full responsibility.
