Question to the Department for Transport:
To ask His Majesty's Government what further steps they will take to ensure that drink driving prevention measures are effective and appropriate for the long-term future.
The Government’s Road Safety Strategy, published in January 2026, sets out a long‑term, evidence‑led approach to reducing deaths and serious injuries on our roads, including tackling drink driving.
As part of the Strategy, the Government has recently consulted on taking tougher action on drink driving. This includes consulting on the general principle of lowering the drink‑drive limit in England and Wales, including an even lower limit for novice drivers, and seeking views on measures such as alcohol ignition interlocks and powers to suspend licences for suspected drink or drug drivers.
Alongside legislative and enforcement measures, the Department will continue to encourage safer road user behaviour through the THINK! road safety campaign, which works to challenge attitudes to drink driving and reinforce its social unacceptability.
