Question to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs:
To ask Her Majesty’s Government what is their assessment of the impact of environmental stewardship schemes in the planting of new trees in England.
New woodland planting is supported by the Rural Development Programme Countryside Stewardship Woodland Creation Grant Scheme. Latest figures show that planting in 2015/16 and so far in 2016/17 has achieved 1,009 hectares or close to 1.4 million trees.
Additionally, to encourage further tree planting, we launched the second round of the Woodland Creation Planning Grant in September and the Woodland Carbon Fund in November.
