Question to the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office:

To ask Her Majesty’s Government whether the UK is compliant with the obligations contained in the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages.

This question was answered on 8th February 2017

The UK takes its obligations under the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages seriously. In their last Report on the UK (2014), the Committee of Experts on the Charter welcomed the co-operation and comprehensive response received from the UK. They expressed their view, however, that the UK wasnot yet fully compliant with all of our obligations and made some recommendations. The Government is currently preparing the UK's next periodical State Report under the Charter, which will set out how we are working to meet our obligations. We aim to submit the report to the Council of Europe later this year.
