Written Question
Boxing
Tuesday 14th February 2023

Asked by: Imran Hussain (Labour - Bradford East)

Question

To ask the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, what recent assessment she has made of the financial viability of grass roots boxing clubs.

Answered by Stuart Andrew - Parliamentary Under Secretary of State (Department for Culture, Media and Sport)

Supporting grassroots sport is a key government priority. We recognise the positive impact participating in sport can have on individuals’ wellbeing and the benefits sport clubs have on local communities.

The government believes that sport has the potential to transform lives and that participating in sports such as boxing can teach valuable life lessons, and we believe everyone should have access to these opportunities.

The majority of funding to grassroots sports projects is delivered through our Arm’s Length Body, Sport England. Work is currently underway with Sport England to better evidence the impact of the projects they fund.

Since 2019, Sport England has invested more than £11 million into projects and schemes in boxing, including £55,000 of support to boxing clubs in the Bradford East constituency. Clubs can contact Sport England directly to understand what funding pots they are eligible for at https://www.sportengland.org/contact-us.

We appreciate the impact rising energy prices are having on organisations of all sizes including sport clubs such as boxing gyms. That is why we announced the £18 billion Energy Bill Relief Scheme (EBRS) in September last year. The EBRS was always time-limited, and has now been replaced with the Energy Bills Discount Scheme (EBDS). Under the EBDS, boxing clubs will continue to receive discounts on their gas and electricity bills during the 12-month period from April 2023 to March 2024.

Scottish Parliament Written Question
S6W-16767
Tuesday 2nd May 2023

Asked by: Sweeney, Paul (Scottish Labour - Glasgow)

Question

To ask the Scottish Government what assessment it has made of the social impact of grassroots boxing clubs in local communities, and, if none, whether it will consider undertaking research to measure any such impact.

Answered by Todd, Maree - Minister for Social Care, Mental Wellbeing and Sport

While the Scottish Government has not undertaken any assessment of the social impact of grassroots boxing we recognise that boxing as a sport is continuing to break down barriers. The wide reach of boxing related projects continues to grow with a lasting and positive impact on people and communities.

Boxing has the ability to reach into disadvantaged communities and engage young people who otherwise might not participate in sport, providing a significant opportunity to address a number of issues including improving health outcomes, reducing inequalities, and benefiting social regeneration.

We will continue to work with sport scotland and Boxing Scotland to ensure that grassroots boxing maintains its positive impact on communities throughout Scotland.

Exercise and Sports: Women
Thursday 20th July 2023

Asked by: Stephen Morgan (Labour - Portsmouth South)

Question to the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport:

To ask the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, what steps her Department is taking to help increase participation in grassroots (a) sports and (b) other physical activity by women and girls.

Answered by Stuart Andrew - Parliamentary Under Secretary of State (Department for Culture, Media and Sport)

The Government is committed to supporting women's sport at every opportunity including pushing for greater participation.

In March this year, the Government announced a significant package of over £600 million to boost school sport, including confirmation of funding for the PE and School Sport Premium and the School Games Organisers network until the end of the summer term 2025. These programmes will improve the quality of PE and sports in primary schools to help children benefit from regular activity and ensure girls and boys have equal opportunity to play sport in school.

Sport England have also developed the Studio You PE teaching resource which aims to get young girls engaged in PE lessons, the platform offers video-based lessons covering a range of non-traditional activities, like boxing, dance, pilates and yoga. In addition, Sport England’s This Girl Can campaign has already inspired millions of women and girls to get active regardless of shape, size and ability. In May this year, This Girl Can and ukactive published guidance ‘How to make your spaces safer for women: A call to action from the 51%’ to help fitness and leisure facilities create safer spaces for women and girls to be active.

In addition, the Review of Women’s Football was published on 13 July, and supports the continued growth and development of women’s and girl’s football. The Government welcomes the work of the Review and will now consider the recommendations before providing a response in the autumn.

Scottish Parliament Written Question
S6W-16766
Tuesday 2nd May 2023

Asked by: Sweeney, Paul (Scottish Labour - Glasgow)

Question

To ask the Scottish Government what assessment it has made of the financial viability of community boxing clubs in Scotland, and what steps it will take to prevent clubs from closing due to increased running and utilities costs in the next financial year.

Answered by Todd, Maree - Minister for Social Care, Mental Wellbeing and Sport

While the Scottish Government has not undertaken any assessment of the financial viability of community boxing clubs, we recognise their importance to the overall physical, mental and social health of communities across Scotland.

sport scotland investment into Boxing Scotland supports a wide range of boxing activity that encourages and supports people to participate in boxing, including both club and coach development.

We understand the challenging financial circumstances facing many sports facilities and are fully aware that rising energy costs are a significant issue. Given that most of the levers to respond to these challenges are reserved, we strongly urge the UK Government to use all the powers at its disposal to tackle this cost of living crisis.

The Scottish Government will continue to work with sport scotland to explore how facility operators and the wider sporting sector can best be supported.
