Written Question
Qassem Soleimani
Monday 13th January 2020

Asked by: Marquess of Lothian (Conservative - Life peer)

Question to the Ministry of Defence:

To ask Her Majesty's Government what assessment they have made as to whether the government of the United States' drone strike on 3 January constituted defensive action under international law.

Answered by Baroness Goldie

Article 51 of the UN Charter recognises that all States have an inherent right of self-defence. It is for the United States to say how the criteria for self-defence are met. The Government of the United States has now set out its case for self-defence in a letter to the UN Security Council dated 8 January.

I understand fears about erratic Trump foreign policy but wonder what would have happened if assassination of Reinhard Heydrich in 1942 had been met with same hand wringing as elimination of Iranian butcher & war monger Qassem Soleimani

No one should mourn Qassem Soleimani, a man whose hands were soaked in blood. But this targeted assassination by the USA against a state actor risks escalating the conflict with Iran - apparently without thinking through the regional and global consequences. It is reckless.
