Carbon Emissions

"My Lords, Anglesey is known as “Energy Island”, not just because of the Wylfa nuclear site but because of the potential of wind power and tidal power around its coast. Will the Minister therefore confirm that renewable projects around that coast will be eligible for financial help from the Government’s …..."

Written Question
Developing Countries: Fossil Fuels
Wednesday 24th June 2020

Asked by: Lord Wigley (Plaid Cymru - Life peer)

Question to the Department for International Trade:

To ask Her Majesty's Government what consideration they give to policies for reducing the use of fossil fuels by 2050 when developing trading links with least developed countries.

Answered by Lord Grimstone of Boscobel

The United Kingdom has long supported the promotion of our values globally, including ambitious global action to tackle climate change, and this will continue as an independent trading nation. We have already legislated to deliver net zero emissions in the United Kingdom, becoming the first major economy to do so.

Climate change is one of the most serious threats facing our world. We are committed to upholding the United Kingdom’s high environmental standards and will consider the mechanisms available to us, including through our trading relationships with Least Developed Countries.

Written Question
Food: Imports
Tuesday 17th March 2020

Asked by: Lord Wigley (Plaid Cymru - Life peer)

Question to the Department for International Trade:

To ask Her Majesty's Government what plans they have to ensure that any future trade agreements with other countries will require that no imported food or drink may contain any asbestos which could enter into the body of a consumer.

Answered by Viscount Younger of Leckie - Shadow Minister (Work and Pensions)

We remain firmly committed to upholding our high food safety standards outside the EU. The UK’s independent food regulators will continue to ensure that all food imports into the UK comply with those high standards.

Trade Bill

"My Lords, I too welcome the amendment. I apologise for taking so little part in the Bill’s progress since participating at Second Reading. This intermittent pattern has been due largely to being stretched on Brexit matters across many different committees and calls.

I support the comments of the noble Lord, …..."

"Does the Minister accept that the problem as seen from the devolved regimes is that, very often, consultation does not amount to very much indeed? That is why the word “consent” is very much more powerful. If consultation was something that was driven with the intention of having a meeting …..."
