To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, if he will make an assessment of the effectiveness of support available to people affected by strokes in north Staffordshire.

Since 1 April 2021, 20 integrated stroke delivery networks (ISDNs) have been operational in England.

In North Staffordshire, the Midlands Partnership NHS Foundation Trust have a dedicated stroke team which co-ordinates the transfer of care of stroke survivors from hospital providing early, effective and community specialist stroke rehabilitation and disability management. In addition, the Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent Integrated Care System has a dedicated early supportive discharge and integrated community stroke service, which ensures that stroke survivors from north Staffordshire have on average a shorter length of stay in hospital than elsewhere in the county.

To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, what assessment he has made of the adequacy of mental health care provision in (a) Newcastle-under-Lyme constituency and (b) North Staffordshire.

No specific assessment has been made. In September we announced ‘Our plan for patients’, which outlines how we will increase access to National Health Service mental health services, including in Newcastle-under-Lyme and North Staffordshire. Ensuring easier access to general practice will expand this route to access mental health services.

Through the NHS Long Term Plan, we are investing an additional £2.3 billion a year by 2023/24 to expand NHS mental health services in England, including in Newcastle-under-Lyme and North Staffordshire.

To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, whether her Department has had recent discussions with suppliers of One Alpha on the procurement of that product for people with hypoparathyroidism.

There have been no specific discussions. We are aware of a shortage of the one microgram capsules due to manufacturing delays, which is expected to be resolved in November 2022. There are two alternative suppliers of alfacalcidol one microgram capsules which remain in stock with no anticipated supply issues.

To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, what assessment she has made of the effectiveness of diagnostic hubs in diagnosing dementia in North Staffordshire.

In August 2022, dementia diagnosis rate in North Staffordshire was 69.4%, which exceeds the mental health constitutional target of 66.7% and the national diagnostic rate. This is monitored through the monthly assurance cycle, in partnership between Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent Integrated Care Board and NHS England. The North Staffordshire Combined Healthcare NHS Trust reports that 100% of its staff felt the hub model increased their knowledge and skills. Allowing trained senior nursing staff to deliver diagnoses has also improved continuity of care.

To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, which specialist surgical mesh removal centres are (a) offering rectopexy mesh removal and (b) expected to be offering rectopexy mesh removal within the next 12 months.

The specialist mesh services in operation do not currently offer rectopexy mesh removal. NHS England and NHS Improvement are working to commission rectopexy services within the specialist mesh centres, to treat those who have been adversely affected by rectopexy mesh. The information requested on the specialist mesh services offering rectopexy mesh removal within the next 12 months is not yet available.
