Syria

"The £2.71 billion contribution to the Syrian aid effort is the single biggest act of humanitarian assistance in our nation’s history. Will my right hon. Friend continue to ensure that a suitable proportion of that support goes to countries such as Jordan and Lebanon, which are doing such important work …..."

Written Question
Kenya: Refugees
Tuesday 6th March 2018

Asked by: Alex Chalk (Conservative - Cheltenham)

Question to the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office:

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, what support the Government is providing to LGBT Kakuma refugees abroad.

Answered by Harriett Baldwin - Shadow Minister (Business and Trade)

The UK supports the delivery of essential services, including health and food assistance, at the Kakuma Camp in Kenya to benefit all refugees. The UK funds assistance through the Support for Protection and Assistance of Refugees in Kenya programme. The programme, worth £35m, assists around 8,000 refugees with livelihoods opportunities and supports the voluntarily return of refugees to their countries of origin. The programme also ensures that survivors of sexual and gender based violence receive appropriate medical care.

"It is a pleasure to serve under your chairmanship, Dame Cheryl, and to follow my right hon. Friend the Member for Newbury. There is no one in this House who has done more than he has to prosecute this matter. I am also grateful for the contribution from the hon. …..."

Sanctions and Anti-Money Laundering Bill [ Lords ] (Third sitting)

"I entirely commend that intention, but I fear that in reality, the wording risks causing confusion and potentially having precisely the opposite effect. The Interpretation Act 1978 indicates that, in any event, the single includes the plural. In other words, where the text says,

“the torture of a person”

that …..."

Sanctions and Anti-Money Laundering Bill [ Lords ] (Third sitting)

"My overriding concern is that I do not like the drafting because it is inconsistent. Although I am very sympathetic to the Magnitsky principle, for which the hon. Lady and my right hon. Friend the Member for Newbury have powerfully advocated—I look forward to what the Minister has to say …..."

Sanctions and Anti-Money Laundering Bill [ Lords ] (Third sitting)

"May I respectfully suggest that amendments 1 and 2 do go together? I say that because to legislate for a purpose that would provide

“further accountability for, or act…as a deterrent to, the commission of a gross human rights abuse or violation”

and then not to define what is meant …..."

Oral Answers to Questions

"T3. The “Fire and Fury” book about the Trump presidency has reheated some debunked claims about the role of British intelligence. Although the ordinary stance of the British Government is neither to confirm nor deny, given the highly unusual facts of this case will my right hon. Friend take this …..."

Counter-Daesh Update

"Taking the fight to Daesh in Syria was a difficult but right thing to do, eroding its territorial base and resources, but in some ways that was the easy bit, because the warped ideology endures. Does my right hon. Friend agree that we must continue to support the security services, …..."

Balfour Declaration

"I welcome the Foreign Secretary’s measured statement, and his optimism about the prospects for a two-state solution with Israel, rightly, living in security. Does he agree, however, that the accelerated settlement-building is not just to be gently deprecated but is truly egregious, illegal, and a growing obstacle to peace?..."

Hurricane Irma: Government Response

"I acknowledge that the Minister does not have direct departmental responsibility for this, but may I press him on the issue of our international aid budget?
